TZAdjust

TZAdjust IconTZAdjust, one of our freeware products, was created for users who find it necessary to make manual changes to the time zone and 'day light savings' offset parameters for their Windows 95/98/NT/2000 computers.

TZAdjust is probably of greatest interest to Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 users. The NT-class operating system returns time information as an offset from Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). In addition, the OS automatically makes Daylight Savings compensations when reporting file times. One can disable "Automatically Adjust for Daylight Savings" entirely in the Windows Day/Time Properties dialog but there may be other instances where finer control over time zone and the daylight offset is desired.

If you are not already familiar with now Windows NT/2000 handles time-related events you should do a search of the Microsoft Knowledge Base for terms such as "Time Zone" or "Daylight Savings". Article Q129574 provides a good summary of this NT/2000/XP behavior.

Please note that Windows 95/98 does automatically adjust the returned file time stamp for daylight savings.

Important: Changing time zone-related settings on your NT machine will probably have global implications beyond reported file times by Explorer or Directory Toolkit. For example, events listed in the NT event log may be affected. Likewise, clients on an Exchange server may find that their emails show the wrong time stamp.

Additional Background: Our Directory Toolkit utility has the ability to compare two paths for alike vs different files using names, size, & time stamp. Users sometimes note that NT/2000 handling of reported file time stamps complicates their path comparisons. For example, when an NT machine in switches between daylight & standard time, a path comparison that was previously synchronized with a local machine may suddenly show up as being out of synch by some exact hour value. TZAdjust can be used to address this behavior. However, casual use of TZAdjust to thwart how NT handles offsets for file time reporting is not recommended. Please see our own document, "Daylight Savings, Standard Time & Reported File Times" for further description and suggestions for Directory Toolkit.

A 'readme.txt' is available in the TZAdjust.zip file. Please see that file for usage instructions and further details.
